Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

There are some cases where saving your tooth is no longer an option, including:

  • Decay that has done irreparable damage
  • A dental infection that could spread to surrounding teeth
  • Advanced gum disease
  • A primary tooth hasn’t fallen out on its own
  • Wisdom teeth that are partially or fully impacted

Rest assured that our dental team will review all of your treatment options at your appointment and answer any questions you have so you don’t feel left in the dark when it comes to something as important as your oral health.

The Process of Removing a Tooth

There are two types of tooth extractions: simple and surgical. Before we provide you with a brief overview of each, it’s important we mention that the first step is always the same: thoroughly numbing your mouth to ensure you don’t feel any pain or discomfort.

Simple extractions are ideal when the tooth that needs to be removed has already broken through the gumline. This allows your dentist to use special tools to gently rock the tooth loose before removing it and tending to the extraction site. Surgical extractions, on the other hand, are ideal when the tooth is still underneath the gums, like an impacted wisdom tooth. This requires a small incision to be made first so that we can access and remove the tooth.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

Once you return home, it’s important that you focus on healing to prevent complications, like an infection. Don’t worry – we will provide you with a list of aftercare instructions to help make this easier, including:

  • Take OTC pain medication as directed
  • Avoid strenuous activity, like weight-lifting or running
  • Eat soft foods, like plain yogurt, and don’t chew on that side of your mouth
  • Drink lots of water to stay hydrated
  • Don’t use any tobacco products
  • Keep your mouth clean

Of course, we will provide you with further information at your appointment, but you can always reach out to us if you have any questions!
